Sanatorium treatment in Latvia

The resort areas of Latvia have been known for quite a long time both in Russia and in Europe.
Back in the 19th century, the local mineral springs were considered holy, and the richest and most noble people came to these regions for treatment, to breathe the healing sea air and improve their health.
One of the most popular resorts located on the shores of the Riga seaside is Jurmala, which was officially recognized as a balneological resort back in 1838.
The mild climate of the seaside, with sandy beaches and coniferous forests, the presence of mineral springs, peat and sapropel mud annually attract numerous tourists from European countries and Russia.

The natural and climatic conditions of the resort, its developed infrastructure, modern comfortable spa hotels that can offer not only relaxation, but also medical procedures aimed at restoring health and beauty have gained great popularity among tourists. One of the popular spa hotels in Jurmala, which has serious potential for providing health and spa treatment services, is the five-star hotel. This hotel is located on the very seashore and is better known as a venue for various cultural events or as a SPA center.
In the SPA center, which has the status of a medical institution, visitors will be offered more than 400 SPA procedures using mud, hydrotherapy, halotherapy, hardware therapy and various types of massages.
Beauty salons will offer you all kinds of programs and rituals, specialists in which will help relieve tension and fatigue, and return you to the radiance of young skin and a great mood. The effect of all health procedures is enhanced by the healing natural climatic factors of the Jurmala resort. This is clean, iodine-rich sea air, swimming in the sea and walking through the most beautiful places in Jurmala, surrounded by coniferous forests.

Sanatorium treatment in Estonia

No matter how hard we tried, we were unable to find full-fledged sanatorium treatment in Estonia. All the sanatoriums that we visited and inspected are more reminiscent of spa centers or, as they call themselves, “Medical Spa”. Despite this, Estonian sanatoriums do not suffer from a lack of vacationers. There are many guests from Finland here who are satisfied with the price level and quality of services provided.

The best place in Estonia for sanatorium treatment that we managed to find is the island of Saaremaa. The distance from Tallinn is only 205 kilometers. But because of the ferry, the actual travel time by car is more than 4 hours. In fact, getting to Saaremaa is not convenient; you have to take a ferry. The inconvenient location has to be compensated for by higher quality of service. We recommend paying attention to the Ruutli Spa Hotel and the Meri Spa Hotel.

The territory of the southern coast of the Baltic Sea belongs to four countries. The landscape of these places is flat with moraine-hilly terrain and hills. Such hills include Hanju in Estonia, Central Vidzeme, Latgale and Kurzeme in Latvia and Samogit in Lithuania. On the contrary, in the Kaliningrad region there are low-lying areas. For this reason, many dunes and sandbars have formed on the coast.

Nature has enriched the Baltic states with an abundance of lakes and a dense network of rivers. As a rule, lakes are surrounded by hills and moraine ridges, which adds expressiveness to the landscape. Lithuania is richest in lakes, followed by Latvia, Estonia and the Kaliningrad region. The Baltic rivers are calm; there are small rapids at the intersections of moraine ridges. Rivers and lakes have very picturesque shores. The Baltic states are also rich in forests, mostly coniferous.

The Baltic climate is characterized by excess humidity, sharp fluctuations in seasonal weather conditions, and strong winds. All this should be taken into account when choosing a treatment date. For example, in winter, a ten-day adaptation period is required. And the most favorable season for climatic treatment of cardiac patients is summer. This time of year brings more consistent, warmer, drier weather.

Baltic sanatoriums with treatment are located in beautiful places, with a highly developed network of communications.

Health improvement areas

The climate of the Baltic Sea is suitable for the treatment of patients with pathologies of the cardiovascular system. Treatment sanatoriums have accumulated experience that allows treatment to be carried out in all seasons of the year. For certain patients, the cardiovascular system can be trained and strengthened. Training consists of gradually expanding exposure. Patients with angina pectoris walk along the seashore towards the wind, or through sea water near the shore.

Latvian sanatoriums in the Baltic states have a program for the treatment of arterial hypertension and figure correction. Treatment is facilitated by absolute silence, sea, pine forest, white sandy beaches, horse riding. For example, the Baltic sanatoriums in Jurmala treat diseases:

  • gynecology
  • musculoskeletal system
  • digestive organs
  • of cardio-vascular system
  • urology

Lithuanian sanatoriums in the Baltic states have pump rooms with mineral water of the class of sodium-calcium chloride waters of a slightly alkaline reaction. For example, at the Druskininkai resort they get rid of such diseases as:

  • respiratory tract
  • female genital organs
  • nervous system
  • musculoskeletal system
  • periodontal disease, prostatitis
  • digestive tract
  • of cardio-vascular system

They are treated using drinking sodium-calcium mineral waters, mineral baths with a mineralization of 10, 20 or 40 g/l, pearl, carbon dioxide, iodine-bromine, turpentine, baths with medicinal herbs, underwater shower-massage, vertical baths, therapeutic mud applications, galvanic mud, therapeutic exercises in the pool and hall, oxygen cocktails, massage, psychotherapy.

History of the region

The region by the sea attracts vacationers with sandy beaches, mineral waters, and healing mud. The Baltic resorts are rich in such gifts of nature. The states of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and part of Russia - the Kaliningrad region are located here. The Baltic resorts have been known for a long time, but their official history begins in the 19th century. At that time, various rulers from Prussia and the Russian Empire issued decrees to found resorts and thus gave rise to the development of sanatoriums in the Baltic states.

Since the 12th century, Baltic resorts have been mentioned in chronicles. For example, from the Chronicle of Indrix, dated 1186, it is known about the use of Baldone medicinal mud (Latvia, the city of Baldone). It was used to treat wounded crusaders after battles with local tribes. Mud was applied to the wounds, and they quickly healed. Baldone is also famous for its mineral water from a sulfur spring.

Also from the crusaders in 1382 it became known about the Baltic resort of Birštonas, which is located in Lithuania. The chronicles speak of healing waters.

In the 17th century, information about the salty springs of the Druskininkai resort was recorded. Local peasants valued water for its properties: relieving fatigue, healing wounds, getting rid of skin rashes.

Jurmala is not only a popular resort on the shores of the Baltic Sea, but also an area with very favorable natural and climatic conditions.

That is why the resorts of Jurmala are deservedly popular among local residents and tourists.
