How much does it cost to eat

You can eat in restaurants, cafes or shops. Most of the restaurants belong to hotels and are located on the coast (some are located right in the water on stilts). Excellent cuisine and sea views will make breakfast, lunch or dinner simply unforgettable (in many hotels breakfast is included in the price of your stay). In restaurants, prices are quite high when compared with makashnitsa shops and very low when compared with restaurants in their homeland. For 200-300 baht you can order a full lunch with the first, second and third.

The most economical way to have a snack is in a makashnitsa. Rice with chicken will cost only 30 baht, and just rice - 10 baht. Salads, soups and appetizers are also available.

Transport prices

You can travel around the island inexpensively by tuk-tuk (songthaew). From the pier to the beaches they have a fixed tariff: from 50 baht (to White Sand) and up to 120 baht (to). From beach to beach, the price starts from 30 baht and largely depends on the ability to bargain and the number of passengers - the more there are, the cheaper the trip for everyone.

But the most inexpensive is your own rented motorbike. Rental costs from 150 baht per day. Gasoline - 28-30 baht per liter (since 2015). There are no high-rise buildings here like in Pattaya or Bangkok. By law, it is prohibited to build tall buildings on the island. The most inexpensive bungalow will cost 350 baht per day. Among the amenities there will be a bed, a bedside table, a bathroom, air conditioning, a TV and other necessary little things. The peculiarity of Thailand is that even for such a price, housing can be quite comfortable. The closer to the beach, the higher the price.

The average price for a comfortable room is about 1200 baht. This is usually in more developed areas with good tourist infrastructure. Compared to Pattaya, the same option there can cost three times less.

Koh Chang has a huge number of cafes and restaurants. Therefore, to find a cheaper option, it is worth visiting the nearest cafes and finding out what they offer. Prices in hotel restaurants are much higher and are calculated on the fact that tourists will not have much desire to go anywhere, and they will prefer to eat where they live. But you are unlikely to be able to save money this way.

The cafe offers dishes of different cuisines, including European, American, Indian, Thai, Russian and others. In such establishments, lunch for two will cost at least 200-300 baht; if you order seafood, the price will increase to 500-700 baht.

A good alternative is to visit a 7-11 store that sells ready-to-eat lunches. Their prices do not differ much from those on the mainland and range from 30-70 baht. But this food is more suitable for a snack.

You can also buy inexpensive products at the night market; there are several of them on the island. They offer a large selection of dishes, but all of them are prepared in Thai style. At the market you can have a hearty meal for an average of 80-100 baht. And sometimes even cheaper.

As for fruits, the price here is also not the lowest. In tourist areas it can be 2 times more than on the mainland. Therefore, it is better to buy them at the market or where the Thais themselves buy them.

Transport prices

An asphalt road runs along the entire coast of the island, thanks to which the transport system is at least somewhat developed here. The main part of the tourism infrastructure is concentrated in the west of Koh Chang. In this regard, songthaews, which are public transport, run here throughout the day.

They can be used to get to the neighboring beach or to any other place. The price depends on the distance. For a trip between the two beaches you will have to pay 50 baht per person. In the evening, all travel around the island is done by taxi.

Please note that there are no metered cars on Koh Chang. Therefore, agree on the cost of the trip in advance, so that later the stated amount does not come as a surprise to you.

Prices for excursions directly depend on where you purchase them and what is included in the tour. The most expensive programs are offered by tour operators, but you will always be accompanied by a Russian-speaking guide.

Street agencies offer cheaper options, but the quality may vary. On average, a quad bike excursion will cost 1500-1700 baht. If you want to go to the waterfalls for the whole day, and also ride elephants through the jungle, the tour will cost 2500-2700 baht.

As for services and entertainment, here too everything depends only on you. Getting to know Koh Chang is very convenient on a bike. Do not forget that the roads at the resort are winding, so if you are not confident in your driving abilities, it is better not to take risks.

On some beaches you need to pay extra for sunbeds. The price varies from 50 to 150 baht. If your hotel has its own beach, sun loungers are provided free of charge.

Khao Pad. This is the best option when you want to eat, but don’t know what to choose. Fried rice, with tomatoes, chicken, garlic, onions, eggs and tomatoes. Shrimp may be added. Drizzled with fish sauce, it's absolutely delicious and yet simple and satisfying.

Tom Yum soup. An amazing soup because it is sour, sweet and spicy. The soup contains a lot of local herbs, some roots and shrimp. Plus lemon juice. It's worth a try.

There are also merchants on Koh Chang offering sliced fruits chilled in ice or preparing natural juice right in front of you for only 20 baht. You can call such catering outlets not meeting sanitary and hygienic standards or simply dangerous to health, but the fact remains: not a single cafe adapted for tourists will be able to taste such real simple Thai very satisfying and tasty food. Plus, this is a very budget food option for tourists on limited budgets: dinner here will cost 50-60 baht, and such that you definitely won’t want to eat until the morning.

On my own behalf, I can add that when we first came to Thailand, we turned our noses up at these makashniks for some time, fearing poisoning, and the specific smell was repulsive. But realizing that in hygienically clean establishments we would only get a vague idea of real Thai cuisine, we took the plunge. And the food, prepared in the middle of a noisy and dusty street, with not very clean hands, on a paper plate, seemed tens of times tastier than what we were fed in decent places, with normal cutlery, at a clean table overlooking the sea.
