How to get from Cairo to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh? Is it worth going on an excursion to Cairo from Hurghada? How far is it from Cairo to Hurghada

We are all accustomed to the fact that trips to Egypt are organized for us by travel agencies. We arrive, name the date, choose a hotel based on our own financial capabilities and needs, then, according to the instructions of the travel manager, we board the plane and rush off to meet new impressions. But last year, my husband and I decided to make our own contribution to such a journey. We booked a hotel in Hurghada through a travel agency, but did not take airfare. We decided to fly with him first to, relax there for two days, and from there go on vacation to another city. But planning the route and choosing the transport fell on my shoulders; I had to sit at the computer all evening. :)

Air Transport

I want to start with air transport, because this is the most convenient way to get from Cairo to Hurghada. The national airline EgyptAir operates daily flights from one city to another.

There are many available flights, so you definitely won’t have any problems with this option. You can view the flight schedule for a specific date on the website of the company that services this air route. I will indicate the Internet page below.

There are several ways to get to Cairo Airport: by taxi, public bus No. 356.

All planes land at Hurghada airport within an hour after takeoff. Agree, this is very fast, despite the fact that there are almost 500 km between these cities. You can also get from the airport to the city itself by taxi (by the way, this is one of the most popular ways to travel from one place to another in Egypt) or private minibuses (stop right at the passenger terminal).

Flight cost

The flight will not be very expensive. A plane ticket can even be purchased for 714 Egyptian pounds (35 euros).

Purchase

It is worth buying tickets online, because this is where you can save not only time, but also money. To purchase, you can use the airline's website or similar.

Bus

If we talk about ground transport, it is worth remembering buses. With this type of transport you can get to the desired location in approximately six hours, but it all depends on the flight.

There is a direct connection between Cairo and the resort town of Cairo, and the route is served by GoBus.

Most buses plying this route are night buses. There are only a few flights during the day. I think this is all due to the fact that the country is incredibly hot in the afternoon. The schedule can be found on the carrier's website.

You can take the bus at several stops in Cairo, in particular at Tahrir Square.

Ticket prices

The cost of travel cards depends on the category of place the tourist will travel to. GoBus buses have:

  • economy class, which costs from 115 Egyptian pounds (6 euros);
  • deluxe - from 140 pounds (7 euros);
  • royal - from 215 pounds (10 euros).

Purchase

You can buy bus tickets directly from the driver. You can pre-book a travel pass with the carrier.

Passenger car

You can take a car for travel. Renting will not take much time, because you can even arrange a rental through A trip by car will take from five hours.

Regarding the pros or cons of this option, I’ll say frankly that I don’t like it. I read a lot of articles on the Internet about traffic on the roads in Egypt and concluded that it is dangerous:

  • Drivers do not respond to traffic lights;
  • tourist cars are cut off;
  • turn signals are used incorrectly, etc.

That is, the main rule of traffic in Egypt is the complete absence of rules. :)

Other options

Regarding railway transport, trains do not run between these cities. In general, Egypt has one of the oldest railway systems in the Middle East, so tourists do not often choose this method of travel. :)

Bottom line

My husband and I traveled to Hurghada by plane. Considering the fact that in April it was already incredibly hot in Egypt, I didn’t want to take a steam bath on a bus, much less rent a car. Therefore, we used the most convenient, in my opinion, method of travel.

To the question, how long does it take to travel from Hurghada to Cairo? Is it worth looking at these pyramids at all? given by the author Lamia the best answer is The drive is about 5 hours, no less. If you are interested in history and want to touch antiquities, then be sure to go. Better yet, take a 2-day excursion Cairo - Alexandria. It's worth it!

Cairo is about 500 km away. The journey takes about 7 hours. Buses from officially operating companies are good. There are no problems with roads either. If your budget allows, it is better to travel by plane. But it’s fine by bus too.

Answer from Dmitry Kozyrev[guru]
Hello. I didn’t go from Hurghada to Cairo, since my trip to Jerusalem overlapped that day. But those who went were not delighted. But I think that if there is an opportunity, it is better to go. Still, a memory for life. By the way, guides always offer only the bus option (about 60 dollars and kopecks and several hours by bus). But there is another option by plane (230 greens last year and only one hour flight). However, they are silent about him, I had to remind him myself.

The drive takes about 7 hours. But, to be honest, I’ll tell you, I went. and I wasn’t particularly impressed by the pyramids themselves. The most interesting thing in the whole excursion was the Cairo National Museum, it’s just a pity that it was impossible to take photographs there (((
In general, the excursion is very tiring (((

Answer from Separated[expert]
Yes, it’s a long way from Hurghada - leaving at night at one or two o’clock, arriving in Cairo in the morning, and returning again at night at about one o’clock. The entire excursion lasts one day, and keep in mind that not all visits to museums are included in the price of the excursion; for some you have to pay more than what you paid (but you don’t have to go).

Answer from Larry Rick[guru]
The drive is approximately five hours.
I was in Hurghada, I didn’t go to the pyramids. Then I began to regret that I did not visit. But there is a reason to go to Egypt again))) You just need to choose a place from where to go closer to the pyramids) otherwise it’s a bit far from Hurghada....

Answer from Evgenia[guru]
THE PYRAMIDS ARE WORTH SEEING AT LEAST ONCE!
I traveled from Sharm. If you look at the mileage, then it’s +- the same ride.
Yes, the excursion will take a day, but it’s worth it!
The museum is VERY interesting!
Well, the pyramids personally impressed me!
The sensations are not at all the same as watching them on TV!

Answer from Tiana[guru]
But why go to Egypt at all, the sea is everywhere, and the pyramids...

Answer from Zoya Zakharova[guru]
It’s not worth it, their drivers are crazy. There is nothing special about these pyramids.

Answer from Oliya Plusheva[guru]
The drive takes 6-8 hours, from Sharm it’s closer. It’s better to go to Luxor and drive for closer than 4-6 hours and there is something to see. It’s worth going to Cairo only for a 2-day excursion, preferably by plane, the flight is only 45 minutes. You need to be in Cairo on Sunday, there is a night show in Russian near the pyramids, and during the day it is so dirty that you don’t see the pyramids, but camel poop, and there are horses, ponies and camels all around, and all without diapers. We were on a Cairo-Alexandria excursion. I liked Alexandria better, almost a European city, clean and calm. And Cairo is dirt, noise and confusion, especially since it’s so hot there now. In Luxor it is always -10 degrees more. than on the coast, Cairo and Alexandria may be cooler.

Answer from Galina Yarets[newbie]
Is it allowed to climb the pyramid?

On January 4, 2018, Vladimir Putin’s decree on the resumption of air traffic with Egypt came into force. For now, only regular ones with Cairo. Now tour operators can officially create and sell tours to this country. Egypt's national air carrier, Egypt Air, has already announced its desire to transport tourists. According to the preliminary schedule, flights will be organized on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first flights should take place in early February.

Is it convenient for Russians to get to the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh from Cairo airport? How many hours will they have to spend on the bus before they end up at their hotels? Let's find out!

So, the distance from Cairo to Hurghada by road is about 460 km. A tourist bus will cover this distance in approximately 6 hours. This is me not taking into account at least one sanitary stop for 20-30 minutes. And the distance from Cairo to Sharm el-Sheikh is even greater - about 500 km. Now it’s not difficult to calculate the total time from leaving the airport to checking into the hotel. I spend at least 1 hour collecting all the tourists on the bus after clearing customs + 6 hours of travel + 30 minutes, one sanitary stop + delivery to hotels from 30 minutes to 1 hour. In total, you will spend at least 8 hours traveling from the airport to the hotel. The first and last days of rest are practically lost due to the long journey. So is it worth consciously choosing such a vacation?

But there is another way: by plane from Cairo to Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh. Flight time is one hour. Departures take place almost every hour or two. The minimum cost of a one-way flight per person is about 6,000 rubles. If you conveniently plan your flights, you can save up to 3-4 hours here. Keep in mind that you will still need to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel.

Below in the air ticket search system you can independently see the current prices and schedule for flights from Russia to Egypt

You can also order a taxi from the airport to any resort in Egypt (Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada or Marsa Alam). You can view current prices and order a car in the form below:

Most likely, if tour operators decide to sell tours to resorts through Cairo, they will do so in a package with a bus transfer. When traveling on your own, it is better to choose a transfer method from Cairo - air travel. It's more expensive, but faster and more comfortable.

Addition: From March 16, 2018, tour operator TEZ tour began selling package tours to Egypt. It provides a direct flight to Cairo with Aeroflot, and then an organized bus transfer to resorts in Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada. Currently, check-ins at hotels will be carried out three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays), according to the airline's flight program. The cost of a tour to a five-star hotel for two people will cost from 1.3 thousand dollars.

For quite a long time, Russian travelers did not have the opportunity to get to Egypt on direct flights. The ban on such flights has been in effect since the fall of 2015. Egyptian airspace is now expected to open any day now, but for now only for regular flights to Cairo. Further travel to resort cities for organized tourists will be provided by the welcoming party of the tour operator. Independent travelers will have to cover the distance from Cairo to Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and other resorts on their own. In any case, it won't hurt to figure out how to do this.

How to get from Cairo to Hurghada?

You can get to Hurghada by flying to Cairo airport in the following ways:

  • immediately buy tickets for domestic flights connecting the capital and the resort;
  • leave the airport, get to the intercity bus station and purchase a bus ticket;
  • rent a car;
  • by taxi.

Let us consider in more detail what the advantages or disadvantages of each of them are in covering the distance from Cairo to Hurghada.

Air travel

The advantage of this method of travel is that it does not require traveling outside the airport area. All you need to do is purchase a ticket for domestic flights. You can do this in advance via the Internet or use airline ticket offices upon arrival.

International flights arrive at Terminal 1, Hall 2. At bank kiosks you need to purchase a visa, paste it into your passport, and fill out a migration card. Next comes the standard procedure for passing customs and passport control. After receiving your luggage, you need to leave the airport. A shuttle starts immediately to the right of the entrance and transports transit passengers between the individual departure areas. It will take you to Hall 4, which is the departure area for local airlines.

This is the fastest way to achieve your goal, as well as the most comfortable one. The plane flies along the shortest route, unlike ground transport. The distance from Cairo to Hurghada will be reduced to four hundred kilometers. Travel time is less than an hour.

Bus routes

There is a taxi stop just outside the airport doors. After agreeing on the price, you will need to get to a bus station, such as GoBus. The bus leaves every hour from Tahrir Square; in Hurghada, the final stop is Nasser Street, from where you can hire a taxi to your hotel or rented apartment.

The distance from Cairo to Hurghada in this case is a little more than 450 km, and the travel time will take approximately 6-7 hours.

Hiring a taxi

Modern technologies have also brought their own adjustments to traveling around Egypt. There is no longer any need to run around the airport parking lot and negotiate with taxi drivers about the cost of the trip. You can negotiate this way to cover the distance from Cairo to Hurghada from home. Today, many services offer taxi services.

By choosing one of the services, you can select the class of the car and its capacity. The driver will pick you up from the airport door or meet you in the arrival hall with a sign. The distance will have to be covered the same as by bus, about 460 km, but in time it will be faster, 4.5-5 hours.

Car rent

You can also take care of the issue of renting a car for traveling around Egypt at home by looking for the appropriate service. Moreover, the car can be delivered directly to the airport. But not all companies can hand it over at the place of arrival, and not at the point of receipt.

The cost of the service will depend on many factors:

  • car class;
  • capacity;
  • equipment and additional options;
  • insurance;
  • rental period.

It is worth knowing that driving on the roads of Egypt as a driver is quite dangerous. Participants in the movement have a rather vague understanding of any rules; everyone travels at their own peril and risk. However, accidents are surprisingly rare.
