Karelia celebrates the traditional Republic Day, which is an official holiday. The celebration begins in the distant 1920. On June 8, 1920, the official document of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee “On the formation of the Karelian Labor Commune” was signed, which gave the people the right to self-determination and proclaim the statehood of the Republic of Karelia. The territorial composition of the Karelian Republic finally defined its borders and acquired the status of an independent region, preserving traditions, culture and language.
Later in 1999, the Chairman of the regional government gave approval and signed legislative act No. 346 “On the establishment of the Day of the Republic of Karelia.” The adoption of this law was due to the proclamation of Sergei Katanandov to the post of governor. It was he who sought to attract investment to the region on the eve of a major republican event. The funds raised were used for the construction and reconstruction of large facilities, the arrangement of kindergartens, hospitals, and other public places for social purposes. The choice of the day and month of the holiday is determined by weather conditions. In summer it is warm in Karelia, which will allow more guests to come.
Karelia has a developed industrial base, among which the metallurgical and woodworking industries, mining, and paper industry predominate. However, most Russians perceive Karelia as a beautiful northern region with charming landscapes. From year to year the flow of tourists wishing to spend their holidays in the Republic is increasing. Particularly popular are water, auto and bicycle tourism, fishing and hunting. Lakes Onega and Ladoga allow tourists to take cruises on ships in the summer. In winter, Karelia attracts with skiing, snowmobiling, reindeer and dog sledding.
During the reign of Alexander Khudilainen, the celebration of Republic Day began to take place in different regions of the republic alternately. Local authorities of the republican subjects received the innovation with delight. This made it possible to attract additional funding to the districts, and therefore, the opportunity arose for reconstruction, construction of new buildings, and landscaping of territories. So, on the eve of the republican holiday, large cinemas, libraries, and hospitals were built. The holiday gradually received the status of “folk”.
Among the places where festive events are held one can name the settlement of Pryazha, located on the shore of Lake Pryazhinskoye, the cities of Kondopoga, Sortavala, Kostomuksha, Olonets. On its birthday, Karelia is traditionally visited by famous, important guests from Moscow and thousands of ordinary people from various regions. The festive program is enriched and improved every year. There are all kinds of exhibitions, pop concert programs, presentations of know-how achievements, and all kinds of design technologies.

For the fifth year in a row, the Days of the Republic of Karelia are held in different regions; since 2013, the location of the celebration is determined based on the results of a competitive selection. The holiday has already been held in Pryazha, Kondopoga, Sortavala and Kostomuksha. This time the guests are hosted by Olonets, where the main celebrations will take place on June 10. Unlike all other cities where the Republic Day was held, Olonets has its own holiday logo - a birch bark sharkunok. This is a new brand of the Olonets region and the republic.

On June 10, the Day of the Republic of Karelia will be hosted by one of the oldest cities in the Karelian region - Olonets. The main celebrations dedicated to the holiday will take place here. The program of events includes theatrical performances, exhibitions, fairs, competitions, festivals, spectacular shows and much more.
Festive events in Olonets on June 10 will begin at 9.00 with a divine liturgy and a thanksgiving prayer in the Cathedral of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God on Mariam Island. At 10.00, an exhibition and presentation of the municipal districts of the republic will open in the House of Culture, which will tell about their history, achievements, industry, production and tourism. Also at the House of Culture there will be a special cancellation of marked products of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Russian Post" and a presentation of a commemorative coin of the "Ancient Cities of Russia" series with a face value of 10 rubles.
The sports program of this year's celebration included demonstration programs in boxing, hand-to-hand combat, fitness, football, as well as master classes on the traditional Karelian game kyukkya.
At 11.00 there will be a solemn ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers at the monument to the Unknown Soldier on Komsomolskaya Street.
On Svirskie Divisions Street from 10 to 17 there will be a Fair Square - a fair and sale of arts and crafts, products of local manufacturers and representatives of municipalities of the Republic of Karelia.
On 30th Anniversary of Victory Street, residents and guests of the city from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be able to take part in demonstration and practical master classes on Karelian crafts, and visit the amateur photo exhibition “Photo-drying.” There, in the first half of the day, there will be exhibitions of artists and sculptors, interactive programs from the Kizhi Museum-Reserve, and the Karelian folk puppet theater in the Karelian language “Čičiliusku” (Petrozavodsk). The Small Stage will host a theatrical performance with the participation of amateur groups of the republic, a solemn award ceremony for married couples with a family experience of more than 50 years, and a festival of Finno-Ugric youth “Karjalan nuorus” (“Youth of Karelia”).
Another platform for creative performances will be “Ecological Street” (Proletarskaya St., 1). There will be performances by folklore children's groups, a theatrical program "Musical Showcase", and various master classes. There will be a petting zoo.
Reading enthusiasts will be interested in the “Karelian Book” venue (Ulitskogo St., 2a), where a presentation of periodicals and books by Karelian writers will take place, and children will be able to take part in an interactive program based on Karelian fairy tales, which will be held by the National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
From 15:00 the festive program will begin on the Main Stage on Gagarin Square. Spectators will be treated to a theatrical performance with the participation of creative groups from Karelia and St. Petersburg, and amateur groups from the Olonetsky district. Guest stars will also appear on stage to satisfy the tastes of audiences with different interests. The holiday will end with a theatrical dance program for young people
